Feature request: Sonicwall/Fortinet style high availability

Fri Jul 19, 2013 1:00 am

This is a revenue generating opportunity for Mikrotik. We have numerous customers that would pay an additional licensing fee to have this product added to the Mikrotik router. I could easily sell this for $1000 a site.

We are having to go to other router vendors (Sonicwall, Fortinet, Watchguard) to look for truly high available routers.

Features:
- Failover detection by numerous methods (physical link states, ICMP heart beat, proprietary heart beat, other methods)
- Configuration synchronization between primary and secondary routers
- Stateful failover of connection table, DHCP table, IPSEC table and others, as an additional license upgrade

If Mikrotik can add this feature, as well as OpenVPN UDP and router push, we can continue to be a Mikrotik only shop and will NEVER have to go to another router vendor.

Remember, we are willing to pay an additional license fee for this high availability product!!! I know there are many others out there that would be also!!!

And PLEASE don't anyone respond and tell me that this is already capable with VRRP and some scripting. VRRP is and always has been a poor excuse for HA. There is absolutely no way to guarantee failover of numerous ports and features by relying on VRRP and scripting. I have seen the Mikrotik router go into funky junk states too many times to put any faith in that. HSRP and CARP are a little closer to solving some of the issues but neither of those are available on this platform.

Thank you for your time.

I concur that these features should be considered. There's already an open-source package that accomplishes _most_ of the features you requested, called CARP, that has been ported to Linux. From that point, it's pretty much a shoe-in for Mikrotik to implement it. =)

edit: Apparently I didn't read your whole post. Sorry.

Hi bluecrow76,
Have a look at pfSense and PcEngines Boards.
With pfSense you have CARP, OpenVPN UDP and a very good ISP Loadbalancing etc.
