VLAN Question (basic)

Sun Nov 10, 2013 3:10 pm

Good Morning all!

I had a question about VLanning. If I wanted to implement a VLAN for some VOIP phones, how difficult would that be? As of now I have a Mikrotik as my gateway. I was watching some how to videos on vlan's and I understand I would have to tag my data.

My question is, the network is full of old netgear switches, do I need to replace those switches with switches that support vlans (aka mikrotiks or better netgears) or can I simply put the VID in the phone and the gateway and will it work? The network does not have any routers in it beside the gateway.

Thanks :)

The Big q in This One. Can you make VLAN on your nethear? If no then you wil have to replace all the netgear you have where you need to have 2 or more VLAN running :(

+1. It really depends what your old switches will do with the VLAN packets, some will drop them... etc. You don't have to replace all of your switches though... you just need to get "some" depending on what your end goal is. Post a diagram of your current network and what you would like to do...
