RNDIS Driver. CDC/ACM

Tue Dec 10, 2013 12:43 pm

Hello, we use routerboard routers in a lot of installations. RouterOs is a very good software, and routrboard is the best routers in Quality/Performance/Price relationship.

We are trying to connect equipment to RouterBoard throught USB. We are testing with RB750UP and V6.7.

The equipment that we are trying to connect are radios and routers. These have RNDIS driver. They works with windows as ethernet connection and we Know that they are suported in linux.

The usb devices are detected but we don't Know how we can charge the rndis driver, to produce that interface appears.

[admin@MikroTik] > /system resource usb print
# DEVICE VENDOR NAME SPEED
0 1:1 Linux 3.3.5 ehci_hcd RB400 EHCI 480 Mbps
1 1:2 AirLink Comm GenX 12 Mbps

Please can you add some option in the new release to permit add ethernet interface from RNDIS (CDC/ACM) drivers?

Thanks a lot

We are trying to connect a digital radio. It has USB conection with rndis driver. We test in mikrotik this radio, and we test a router that we Know that have the same rndis driver. The result is the same, we don't Know how to enable the EthernetoverUSB interface.

It will be possible in next release to enable, rndis driver manually ? (I understand that it have to be similar to "support Android usb tethering interface" that mikrotik supports in V6.7 )

Thanks a lot,

please contact support@mikrotik.com with a support output file attached from the board, we could check if it is possible to add support for it so easy or not.

uldis, could you check if it's possible to add support one more RNDIS/CDC ethernet device?
/system resource usb print detail
 0 device="1:1" vendor="Linux 3.3.5 ehci_hcd" name="RB400 EHCI" serial-number="rb400_usb" vendor-id="0x1d6b"
   device-id="0x0002" speed="480 Mbps" ports=1 usb-version="2.00"

 1 device="1:5" vendor="MediaTek Inc." name="WiMAX USB Card" vendor-id="0x0e8d" device-id="0x7115" speed="480 Mbps" ports=0
   usb-version="2.00"
ROS 6.7 has introduced new feature: Android usb theatering. Actually this is the same RNDIS/CDC Ethernet/ Ethernet over USB feature.

Currently ROS try to detect and setup particular vendor/device.
I suggest you to create one more step in initialisation script with "generic Ethernet over usb" support.

Let it try to load generic driver without eny extra features in case of system has recognized USB device as CDC Ethernet type but hasn't found exact type from LTE/Android list. A lot of devices need only ifconfig usb up and DHCP client on it. Please create usb name in tabs of intefaceses and give a chance to a big number of modems and phones start to work without extra support.

I have a lot of old fashion of USB WiMAX cards and clear understand that nobody will want to support in future. But I can use it on some home routers like Tplink, Zyxel. This number is growing just because of updating of CDC ethernet support in new images. Hope Mikrotik guys can update thei system this way too.

if the modem interface uses the cdc ethernet interface just for the data transfer all the configuration is done on the modems web page configuration and not by using special AT commands fro the serial interface then we could check if it is easy to add or not.
If you have such modem, connect to the router, make a support output file and send it to support@mikrotik.com we could check if it is possible to add support or not.

I sent request with ticket#2013122766000566. Is there any way to track updates?
