which serial console cable?

Mon Jan 06, 2014 11:17 pm

Hi, regarding Mikrotik I'm a newbie, and I've recently bought a RB2011UiAS-RM as a router for my new home.
Before starting using it, I'd like to buy a console cable, I've read online ( http://forum.mikrotik.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=66920 ) I need a cisco-style rollover cable...

Can you confirm me this is the kind of cable I need?

Yea that is it. Do you have a console port on your computer? If not, you will need a USB to serial cable.

Something like this.

Greetings

In the meanwhile, I've built and tested a cable. I'm reporting things here, maybe someone will find this post useful.

1) I've not built a rollover cable + adapter, but an adapter "inverted", that works with common ethernet cables.
2) I just used a flat 8 wire phone cable, with straight rj45 on both ends
3) I bought a modular db9 rj45 adapter , like http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/4 ... SY300_.jpg

Pin are numbered like in http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/do ... t.html#db9
Looking at their table, pinout for a direct rj45-db9f adapter is (having a straight cable instead of a rollover one, I "jumped" from first to third column)

rj45 db9f
1 8
2 6
3 2
4 5
5 5
6 3
7 4
8 7

Tested this with minicom on linux, 115200 8N1 , works fine

Yes, i can't find console cable nearby for reasonable price, so i've buyed RS232 cable, blue UTP and made it myself according to pinout at Cisco's site.
Here are my notes for pinouts on both sides
RJ45 is according to T-568B
DB9 _____ RJ45
8 - orang/whit (1____|
6 - orange (2____|__
2 - green/whit (3____| |
5 - blue (4____| |
5 - blue/white (5____| |
3 - green (6____|__|
4 - brown/whit (7____|
7 - brown (8____|

     DB9 female, solder side
   1 2 3 4 5
