RB750GL newbie - RouterOS vs OpenWRT

Thu Mar 06, 2014 6:57 pm

Hi all,

I just bought the RB750GL, my needs are fairly straight forward.

1) Have a reliable, fast gigabit router-switch combo that runs my home network fast and connects to the Cable Modem.
2) Support openvpn so that I can access the home network while I am away from home.
3) Demote my current Asus RTn16 router to be a wifi AP.

I spent some time trying to setup the OVPN server, and couldn't get far. I am new to Router OS and wondering for my use case, if it makes better sense to use OpenWrt. Please let me know what you think. The primary reason is that the documentation is pretty scarce and all lean towards using and Winbox & I don't have Windows machines @ home.

The real question is, what are you more comfortable with? If DD-WRT is something you are comfortable with and it will handle your needs, then that is the right choice for you. I use Mikrotik at work and at home because it what I am the most comfortable with and I think it has the best feature set for the money on the market. OpenVPN is confusing until you get it working, but after that its not so bad.
