So, RB850Gx2 and metarouter

As with the RB450G before it, this unit is only really useful with metarouter. It having a dual core probably means it doesn't have this feature. Anyone from Mikrotik?

Well.. I could use it without metarouter :) but would really want to see this working ... looks like there is some work in progress regarding metarouter and multicore cpu support, hopefully not just for tilera CPU ...

I'm sure that's the case for you, but plenty other people find ethernet routers useful for other things :)

We have plans for a major rework in this are sometime in the future.

Why would I want 512MB flash and 512MB RAM if I can't do metarouter? It's not enough for a BGP full table, and it's too much for everything else.

Whoa, wait, what? I thought that the RB850Gx2 was only going to have 128MB flash. As soon as I saw that, I immediately dismissed it as an RB450G replacement.

MikroTik, please do not discontinue the RB450G until there is a replacement for it that matches or bests it in all areas, including Metarouter support. I voiced my concern about this happening a year ago: http://forum.mikrotik.com/viewtopic.php ... 03#p351703

EDIT: Huh, weird...I just downloaded the MikroTik catalog and it does show 512MB of NAND flash on the RB850Gx2 now. I could swear it used to say something else. Did MikroTik change this, or is this a misprint? If the 850Gx2 is going to have 512MB of flash, then I am much less worried about it replacing the 450G, assuming that they can get Metarouter running on dual-core PPC. (If we are lucky, the 850Gx2 will share the same kernel with the 1100AHx2, and I can try my uniprocessor kernel substitution trick on the 850Gx2.)

Given KVM support for MIPS32 is coming in QEMU 2.1 and already exists for PPC, I am hopeful this is the direction Mikrotik take :)

:) You are right. They changed this. First version was with 128MB. Read this post from Normis:

this is most probable path that we are going to take. MIPS most probably will still be metarouter, while other arch. will use KVM as basis for virtualization (including mutlicore and singlecore PPC)

Thanks for the teaser Janisk. We look forward to this coming to fruition :)

Are there any updates on this? I'm very interested in getting MetaROUTER up and running on my 850Gx2.

i hope it will support external storage, devices like ccr1009 have only 128mb of integrated nand

any updates on this? I didn't know metarouter wasnt supported on RB850Gx2 until after I bought it. Now the 512mb ram just sits there idle.

Yes, please implement Metarouter support on 850Gx2 and also on RB3011 (arm).
