Many companies have patch panels in the center of each corridor, a wireless Cloud Router Switch would be great. New modern houses also has patch panels, where a rackmount unit with wireless would be good. All rackmounted units cost $10 less than the modell with wireless, I would be happy to pay extra for a wireless option in the following products.

At todays times I was really long time not hearing anything about those
wishes, but before a long time many peoples, like @honzam where asking
for those cases, but I really know only one company who was producing
one case such as @honzam is looking for! But I am sorry not for the MikroTik
RB2011 series because of the long time ago those cases where sought after.

Ok, as I told first it is not done for the RB2011 series but with a RB493AH or RB493G
and a miniPCI WiFi card you will be get also a really fine running WiFi router in a 19" case.

Please don´t forget you are buying the 19" case and the mounting plates for each board
must be bought separately and exact matching the board you want to drive in.

If each new RouterBoard will be sorted with an ordinary miniPCIe slot
with support for mSATA, Modem and WiFi each of us will be able to
fit his own and different needs and it dosen´t matter what kind of
needs or interests we all have.

In this situation honzam only needs to insert a Ubiquiti wireless miniPCie card
and all will be running smooth the next one needs hard log file storage space
and insert a mSATA and the next one needs a modem line to the Router and
adds a modem, so I am really interested what should be the entire cost
of an miniPCIe slot with SIM slot on each new RouterBoard?

Well. We can stop ask for new functions. Or mikrotik can produce some kind of jigsaw puzzle some "lego" or something like arduino - but for network... the question is if there can be sold enough pieces in order to pay for development.

What bothers me is that the circuit boards are identical, except that the rack-mounted products lacks some semiconductors. Why not assemble all semiconductors on every products and let the customer decide if he needs it?

Any comment from MT?

Yes. This is the solution. Buy two if you need one and switch them. I have already written on this forum that some kind of jgsaw puzzle like arduino would be nice to have from mikrotik.

No, One device is better then 2devices.
Rb2011 or rackmout CRS125 with wifi is better solution. Coax cable is short for this purposes...

I want to go one step ahead on this, and if all new RouterBoards will
be assembled with one miniPCIe slot + SIM, ready to support mSATA, modem
or a WiFi card each of us could be able to set up what he want.
- mSATA for log file storage or a large user database
- modem for connect from far far away or alarm over SMS
- WiFi card for easy connect to the device or a better integration in existing networks

I don´t really know what is the price for a miniPCIe + SIM slot on each device
but I want to be willing to pay more for a like this given option.

Rack does not have to mean a metal cabinet. I have a 19" two post relay rack for my network and server gear at the house. My current RB951 AP is sitting on a shelf 2U below the 48 port patch panel and above the Atom based server. I have good RF coverage with the power turned down to reasonable levels. A CRS is on my personal wish list.

A patch panel and a CRS with wifi could be all you need for sites with 24 or fewer wired devices. A unit with rack ears would be more tidy in that type of environment. It's not a deal breaker, we can still wall mount something.

We currently mount 2011s inside the steel cabinets at our tower sites so that we don't have to leave the cabinet open in the rain while we trouble-shoot. With the power set to 8db, it works well enough in our trucks parked within 5 meters of the cabinet, and doesn't interfere with the sectors mounted 20 to 50 meters above.

So, while you may think an AP in your rack cabinet is a dumb idea, there are a lot of situations where a rack mountable all in one networking device like the CRS can be useful.

The question is: Are there are enough situations where a rackmount CRS with wireless is needed to support the extra cost of MikroTik building, and distributors stocking, that product?

I have about 50 clients where that product would be an excellent fit. Unfortunately, they all upgraded to Gigabit switches 2 years ago and are not unhappy with their Zywall/Linksys/Cisco ASA/NetGear/D-Link routers. So, it's not like I would be placing an order for 50 units tomorrow if the product did exist. I would have bought two units for remote branches of a local health care clinic in the last month, had it existed. We installed the desktop model instead. Not as clean, but it worked.

Having a "all-in-one" option is really usefull for most clients.

Right now, I'm using RB951G-2HnD with a separate "cheap" switch or installing a tablet on the top of the rack to place the CRS125-24G-1S-2HnD-IN

Yes, its going in a metal rack, but its for equipment support in the data center/radio repeater site while we are in front of the rack. Plenty of 2.4 GHz energy getting out of the racks cracks, etc. The latest laptops do not come with an Ethernet port, without possibly buying a separate proprietary interface cable.

Yes - I can but one of those cheesy POE/Ethernet/802.11 access points, but now I have to learn yet another product to configure and maintain.

I have my Airport in a sliding 1U rack shelf together with some other things.

I will replace it and my desktop RB2011 with a single desktop unit in the future and it will go in the same shelf.

So it is important to still be able to "flatten" the antennas when there are many, not everybody needs full range.

Rack mount versions of this kind of devices are a waste of space.

I will avoid rack mount as long as a desktop version with enough ports could be smaller.

I now saw a cheaper drawer than the one I have: 26 euro (neither would be deep enough to be installed in a server rack: 360-480mm).

There are many modern laptops with Ethernet (down to 12mm thick), as well as standard adapters.

The thinnest laptops are 9mm.

The RB4011 is very similar, and comes with Rack Mount adapters

I think that kind of solution works best for everybody:

- Fewer costs because of less development and simplified inventory
- You don't need to buy a shelf if you have space in your rack
- You can fix it if the rack is mobile or for tidier cabling
- If you want small you got it.
