802.11g mode AP with RouterOS

Thu Jun 03, 2004 1:46 pm

To pick up a topic that has been extensively discussed, but never really resolved (as far as I have seen): The 802.11g mode in RouterOS AP.

Summing up the problems other users have reported on the mailing list, there seem to be problems when operating an RouterOS AP in 802.11g mode. Mostly this leads to the fact that 802.11g clients can't connect to the AP.

I took a Netgear WG121 (802.11b/g USB adapter) for testing right now. The RouterOS is a 2.8.10 with an Atheros AR5212 interface. Put into 802.11b mode, everything works fine.
If I switch the band to 802.11g (2.4GHz-G), the Netgear client still is seeing the AP as 802.11b and cannot associate to it.

I would like to make one more effort and try to track this down in order to
a) find out if the problem is on RouterOS side or not and
b) if it's a RouterOS problem help the guys at MikroTik with the best debugging info we can give them to help solve the problem.

So perhaps everyone who has conducted test regarding this problem could post a summary of their findings (including used wireless interfaces, clients etc.) here?!

Hi Christian,
if you need 802.11g now, connect an 802.11g AP (e.g. from Artem) to a NIC. I use this method to distribute WLAN in widespread buildings. From my point of view Artem is making in terms of RF performance the best access points.

Hi Thomas,

that's correct, but what I wanted to achieve was to help identify and solve the problems people experience with the RouterOS 802.11g AP mode.

Apart from that: You're the MikroTik user who's closest to me I know until now ;-) (I suppose around 70km...)
