The last time I tried to start setting up a 750 I gave up because I couldnt even work out how to set the ip of the board! Is there a simple idiot's guide anywhere that will get me going? (can one even set the board to a static ip for access?)

I feel your pain, i have been using Mikrotik for years and still know bugger all! Greg Sowell has some awesome training videos that really help a lot. Other than that i would recommend looking through these forums as pretty much everything is in here somewhere!

As for the static IP address i reckon use winbox and connect to the mac address to make life easier in the beginning. You can set the static ip by connecting with winbox
Click IP --> Addresses --> Click the + Sign and add IP address like 192.168.1.123/24 and click apply, you can change the interface to another using the drop down.

Try resetting and removing the config, then play.
Also try with the config in place and have that paperclip ready! I hope that i havent made this too basic for ya but i hop it helps somewhat
