How to set up an Access Point and Client or Point to point

Mon May 12, 2014 6:51 am

To you that is looking at the Mikrotik Operating System or even dont know how to get into the system, This thread is for you. If there was such a thread I could not find it, I assume others cant either. BTW, I can be in the isle with soap and not see it! This is a attempt to target getting into google search results for the ones searching for things like, (how to learn Mikrotic Fast). Here we go!

You need a Radio that will allow you to use a level 4 license or above in order to Broadcast out a signal! Anything Under a level 4 makes a receiving end. You have to buy the board with the license already on it.

So now you have 2 boards, you want one to send out a signal and the other to receive it, Great! Lets do this! Sit your Stress Aside and strap on your seat-belt, Ima show you how to get a connection made in 10 minutes the redneck way, keep in mind I can point click and punch things not knowing what they are, it just works! You can learn whatever you want later. This is for the ones thats completely lost like me.

First, Boot up your Level 4 Radio, Plug it into your ethernet port on the side of your computer assuming your POE is plugged in and powered on.

You might can skip this next section, See Using Winbox, For connecting to the radio and logging in.

Second, We need to connect to the Radio somehow, not like the thing came with instructions. So what you need to learn how to do is find the Radios IP address, thats the number you'll be using to connect to these things. So Click on Start/Run and Type in CMD hit enter, A black box should appear. Type CD.. That makes the screen easier to read, now type cls, this clears it, type color a, this makes it where you can read it in the dark without straining your eyes, Great! Your ready to look for the ip address of the Radio connected to your computer. You do this by typing in ipconfig /all hit enter. again thats (ipconfig /all). Now, since it is plugged to the ethernet port on your computer, we will be looking under the ethernet adaptor category not the wireless one. You are looking for an ip number just to the right ip4 address, or it may be after gateway, either way, the Ip address is there somehere close! Talk about redneck lol.

Now take that IP and type that Ip into the web Browser, hit enter and you should be prompted to enter a username and password. Enter Admin for the username leave the Password blank click enter. Great your in! No? Press and hold the reset button on your routers board while plugging the power up to your poe thats powering your device, this resets it and clears out passwords someone may have put in it not from the factory.

So now your in your routerboard? no, somethings wrong and you dont know why it didn't work? sometimes not sure why you will have to go to network sharing center, I do this by right clicking the icon by the clock. you need to change your adaptor settings, you can click on change adaptor settings by clicking on that link or click on the connections link then click properties then ip4 then properties again, check use the following ip address and enter 192.168.88.100 then under that 255.255.255.0 then the bottom one 192.168.88.1 then apply that. you should now be able to connect. Remember, you have to redo this when you get ready to deploy everything before you can gain internet access. You configure it back to auto when done.

You can also download winbox, you are ask to hover your mouse over a IP address or MAC address, that took me a month to learn. Sometimes you have to use a MAc address to login, sometimes an IP, I guess it depends on how the computers Feeling. You'll catch on to this no instructional stuff.

Assumming your in now, You see a bunch of mess, ignore it, all of it! Because that's what it is is mess.

The only think you are required to do to turn your Board into a Transmitter is click on the wireless tab, you should see wireless tables to the right, enable the one there or add a new one. Examine this and feel around. This is your Wifi Transmitter, Here you set how the radios talk to each other, so double click your Wlan or whatever it is called and click on the wireless tab. Make the Mode (AP BRIDGE) This is the transmmiter, You want to make the SSID on this radio Match the one on the Other Radio or it want work. Also, The Protocols must be the same, I use 802.11 You can leave them both at default, just make sure they match. make sure all the frequencies and everything is a match!

Now Click on the bridge tab and add a new one, or if theres one there leave it be. Click Ports, add one for ether and one for Wlan, thats simply enough. It spells it out for you so dont worry. Also, You dont need to know what this does, its just required to get it to work.

Last thing, check your wireless tab, and find the security profile tab, this is the hotspot password, put it to none, you can change this later right now we're just trying to get the radios to talk to each other. Thats it, your done.

CLIENT:::
Reset your client or level 3 device, keep settings like you did with the Transmitter.
Create the wireless tab etc, make it match what you did on the AP Bridge, but the only difference is now this client will be a STATION not AP Bridge. It can take in but not Transmit. So set to station! Make everything match, even the Security Tab set to none like before.

Click on bridge, make sure one is there, if not add one. Your not required to have ports created here for this to work. Your radios are ready!

Click on Wireless tab, to the right under wireless tables Click Registration and this will show you all connected Radios, there you can see signal levels buy double clicking a connected mac and going to signals.

I did my Client with a Laptop connected to it. I did my AP Station threw a router. This way I could tell when I had a connection and when I didn't. Else, you have to move ethernet cords around. Good luck.

Sometimes Radios gets locked up, it happens allot. If its not working, reset the thing and do it all over, eventually you'll get good at it, and it'll start working!

I hope I helped someone out there like myself, I cant read and understand Nerd language or Manuals Written by Geeks. For those like me, I hope I helped.

I know someone is prob reading this roflthereao, but it was written on the fly. If you need help, just reply here, i'll help you.

Using WinBox: Winbox is a downloaded Program that is clicked on and used to log into the radio. what they do not tell you is you can connect to the Mac address or IP address by hovering your mouse over the IP or Mac, Some people get errors and cant loging when using the IP Copy to Input box and clicking enter, Not realizing you could have used the Mac address by justing clicking it instead of the IP, and vice versa. Try this first before changing any network settings on your computer.
