PPPoE Server - mass disconnects

Sun Sep 21, 2014 2:39 pm

Hi there.

I've got a bit of a problem with mass disconnects on my router. For a long time the device was running 5.26 and everything was working rather well. But then, we've finally decided to upgrade - 6.18 was working well on all of our other devices, so why not.
Our users are connecting to PPPoE Server on main router - about 300 of them. Soon after the upgrade we've noticed some bad things happening. Every few minutes a lot of users are getting disconnected - can be anywhere from 10 to 100. They reconnect moments after that.

The logs are not really helpful. The router and the clients have only one thing to tell us: "peer is not responding". That's it. I'm sure this is not the issue with the stability of our wireless links - even sessions connected through cable get disconnected. It's not the issue of weak hardware either - the main router never exceeds 50% CPU and 10% RAM usage.

We've always had a keepalive timeout for PPPoE sessions set to 10 - increasing it only lengthens the intervals between mass disconnects. Disabling it seems to lengthen them considerably, but that's not a good longterm solution.

Any ideas how to prevent it, besides downgrading?

EDIT: Well, the post has spent a while in moderator's queue waiting for approval. Anyway, I've managed to solve my problem - apparently the PCI Ethernet card in router was failling. It was replaced and everything works very nice now.
