VPN from Kazakhstan

Wed Nov 26, 2014 10:38 am

Hi,

I need to prepare a site to site VPN from site in Kazakhstan to my site in EU. Anybody knows what to look for?
I'll use RB750UP with GSM USB modem. Required bandwidth is low, 50-100 kbit/s, data security is not an issue, just the link stability. Anything can go, but prefer PPTP for simplicity.

What I am concerned:
- VPN blocking, is there any filtering/blocking on the ISP side?
- APN address, how to setup for unknown provider?
- Should I send my own modem with the router? I have an unlocked Huawei E303 at hand.
- Anything else?

Thanks, Z

Edit:
I can and will test everything here, but once it leaves my hands I have zero control of the router until it has a working connection. What should I do to ensure the GSM connection will work out of box? Exept having network coverage and valid sim card.

Here are some clarifications:
- I have to configure the router and prepare it to connect with my server in EU
- The router is transported and installed by technician who doesn't know anything about networking. Same applies to SIM card and GSM modem.
- The VPN tunnel is used to remotely commission other devices on the site. It has to be alive for a couple days, max. a month.
- The tunnel is site-to-site.
- Only available internet connection is via mobile network.

My friend. You can test almost everything from your placer before sending the router and the modem..... but...... you need to configure the APN before leaving. APN is mandatory to setup, because is the configuration for the internet-gateway of the SIM. You need to know the provider and the APN name before. And..... if the SIM is locked or unlocked for PIN request....

If you setup the modem withoup pin and the SIM requires PIn.... you are lost.

Hi,

We have a stable VPN link from Almaty to EU. In Almaty, we use Beeline mobile provider and we deleted PIN requirement from SIM card for ease of configuration. No port blocking on any side. everything works as expected. EU side: RB 1100AHx2, Almaty side: RB 751U-2hnd with ZTE 668A USB modem and as said above, a Beeline 3g SIM card.

for vpn, you can use sstp just in case the mobile operator there is 'smart' and blocks everything except http and https. sstp works over https port.

Addon:

Problems in Almaty ;). beeline started to block VPN traffic. Use SSTP like KillerOPS recommended.
