However, it hangs, trying to get the NTP status:

It seems that 'get status' doesn't return anything, even though a print shows the status as synchronized?

Using get doesn't return anything on it's own... you'll have to set it to a variable, or use :put, something like this: What I would do is enclose the whole script in curly braces { } (because you're using local variables) and paste into the terminal. See if there are any errors, and proceed from there.
