pptp vpn and windows file services?

Fri Jul 07, 2006 11:36 pm

So i have a fully functional pptp vpn between my home and office. At the office i have some networked xp machines that have windows file sharing drop boxes for each other. They work fine in the office.

Now when connected via the vpn i can ping my office printer ect..but if i click on my network places i see all the drop boxes for the office computers just as if i was plugged in at the office, but if you try to open any of them it just times out.

any ideas? no log messages on the MT router (vpn server).

tks

Edit your files hosts and lmhosts and add the hostnames and IP addresses of the hosts at the office.

I'm assuming now my problem is that the machines are running windows firewall so its blocking the IP access?

editing the lmhosts and hosts files did not help but i think thats due to the firewall right??

EDIT: before i did anything with the hosts file i could see 5 or 6 shared folders when vpn'd in just as i would if plugged into the office via a hard wire.. now i dont see any shared folder to even try opening with the lm hosts edited..

Yes, it could be a firewall problem. Check the folders' user permissions as well.

Ok i've done both of those and i can ping the server via the vpn, via its window domain name.

When i do:

run:

\\domainname\share

it just times out and I dont get anything.
or is there a better way to mount a share?

any ideas?

EDIT: If the firewall is blocking port 135-139 but I'm doing all this via a VPN does it matter? does the vpn not tunnel everything and bypass the fw at the ISP's ROUTER level (in this office our isp is some guy who brought in a t3 and he blocks 135-139.)
