OS upgrade Routerboard RB1100AHX2

Tue May 12, 2015 6:45 pm

Hi,

I want to upgrade the Router OS to 6.22. But how do you know what version to download from the Microtik Site.

I was using Winbox, downloaded what I thought was correct, put it root folder, and rebooted.

Now the unit seems to be broke. Just has a green flashing light.

But then wondered was it supposed to be PPC or mipsle.

Check for updates in Winbox did nothing.

the RB won't upgrade if the file you uploaded isn't the right architecture.

Try resetting or netinstall'ing it.

Hi,

Thought I would update my own question into how I fixed it.

Apparently its a know issue on my model of box, that a firmware upgrade can break it.

Also Netisntalling it didnt work either. It would net install OK, but when it rebooted would have same fault.

So used a Null modem cable to get on it. Open case up. press reset switch while powering on. To get into boot mode.

Boot into the fail-safe backup boot loader

That then means you get a basic load of the unit. Use Winbox. Up load the new OS use the files. You should just have enough time to do it if your quick. Reboot the system from Winbox. You will then see it upgrading via your Console session.

Took me a couple of attempts but finally did it and it worked.

Now is it booting with the backup booter or the main one?

Sorry,

Yes the Backup Booter,

Once you select it, you have to press another key, to make it boot into it.

You can achieve the same (if you don't have a serial cable) by netinstalling, connecting via Winbox then go to System> Routerboard, Settings button, and tick force backup booter.

That means your main booter is damaged, keep that in mind just in case someone resets it to defaults.
