Hi, the RB2011UAS has a rj45 console port on the back, im using a blue RJ45 cisco console cable to connect it to a cisco 2950 which also has a RJ45 "console port".

Ive set the RB side baudrate to 9600/8/n/1 (as well as tried auto baud) and power cycle the cisco switch but i get no input on RB /system serial-terminal port=serial0.

However if i use the RJ45 to Serial DB9 adaptor (cisco supplied) on the blue cisco serial cable, and then connect to the serial port of a RB433, i am able to see the RB433's RouteOS data via RB2011's serial-terminal. (thus i know the blue cisco cable is good)

by the same token, if i use the same blue cisco cable, and connect it to the serial port of the RB433, and plug the RJ45 end of the Blue cable into the Cisco RJ45 console port, im able to see the Cisco Switch serial data on the RB433s serial-terminal. (so all console/serial ports and blue cables/adaptors are good)

The issue / my question is, what am i doing wrong by connecting the RJ45 console port of my RB2011UAS to the RJ45 console port of my Cisco 2950 via a blue Cisco RJ45 console/serial cable? (note: the blue cisco cable has rj45 on both ends, ive used it many times with my RB433s , just always with one end having the rj45-to-db9 serial adaptor, my problem occurs when both sides have a RJ45 console port).

Another, perhaps more clear way of asking my question is:

Has anyone hooked a RB2011UAS (or any RB with a RJ45 Console port) to another device also with a RJ45 console port? (ie a cisco switch with a RJ45 console port, *not* a standard db9 console port)

and if so how / what kind of cable did you use?

I should have stated this in my OP, but yes i have tried a regular cat5 as well as a crossover cat5, neither give any input from the cisco SW via serial-console.

EDIT: i also have a db9 male to male gender changer, so i tried hooking Cisco RJ45 console --> blue rj45 w/ db9 <-> male to male gender changer <--> blue rj45 w/ db9 ----> RB 2011 RJ45 console port.

TO be clear, My rb433 works fine on this cisco RJ45 console at normal settings, and my RB2011 RJ45 console works fine to the RB433 with blue cisco RJ45 console cable. The problem is RB 2011 RJ45 console to CIsco RJ45 Console (with any of the many cables ive tried). The issue is when both console ports are RJ45

FYI: I just purchased as CISCO Blue Rj45-to-RJ45 console cable (rj45 on both ends) and im still unable to get anything to show up on /sys serial-terminal port=serial0 on the RB2011UAS.

MT: what is up with the RJ45 console ports on this specific Routerboard version (the RB2011)??

using the same, new CISCO Blue Rj45-to-RJ45 console cable, with a rj45 to serial adaptor on one side, im of course able to see the cisco's console output on a RB433. so it has to be something different or unusal with specially the RB2011's console port, right?

(keep in mind, as i stated in a few posts above, the RB2011's console port is functional/works when connected to a rb433).

any ideas? or can MT chime in and state what is different about the rb2011's RJ45 console port?

There's nothing different. Have you tried a serial crossover cable?

For a serial cable to work, atl least the Rx and Tx lines have to be crossed, assuming there is no hardware flow control used. If that flow control is used, CTS/RTS and DTR/DSR have also to be crossed, and GND has to stay in the same position on both ends.
The console cable being symmetric, you should check that pin 1 goes to 8, 2 to 7 , 3 to 6 and 4 to 5.

If this is not the case, just re-crimp an RJ45 on one end, with the flat cable rotated 180 degrees.
(my Cisco cable has a fixed DB9 on one end so I can not check...)
You should also try to disable, if possible, the HW flow control, because it is possible that the interfaces don't offer the full pinout on the console ports.
